The Weekly Wrap - Leaving New York & PEARL + HAMMER #339

This was probably one of the biggest weeks I've had all year!

1. My team and I released the very first issue of PEARL + HAMMER. And in one week it has amassed 65,000 views. I am seriously overwhelmed. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. I know I'm totally whoring up my social feeds but if you haven't read it I'd ask you politely to have a look. We put a lot of effort into it. Thanks chums.

2. The wonderful Melissa Chrisp, who is in the first issue of PEARL + HAMMER, wrote this about the team and I. It made my day. Thank you.

3. Design extraordinaire, Alice, had these wonderful words to say about this is morgs and PEARL + HAMMER. Thank-you!

4. I flew back to New Zealand for christmas. The first thing I did? got a steak and mushroom pie. Not even kidding.

5. Then went to a friends place, made lolly cake, drank whiskey, and slept like a log.

6. Went fishing in my hometown. Think what you like, but fishing is actually one of my favourite things to do. I'm a tomboy at heart.

7. Met up with my pal Haylie. We ate salmon. Talked about changing the world. You know, that thug life.

8. Bought a boogie board and some fins. The New Zealand coastline is going to get a serious dose of morgs-ness this summer.

9. Drew a series of depressed unicorns (see above) because I miss New York.

10. My buddy Ryan is moving to New York next week and... he has a blog. I suggest you follow it. This guys is one of the funniest and most talented peeps I know. And he's in the latest issue of PEARL + HAMMER.

11. Reminded you, yes you reading this, to have a look at our magazine PEARL + HAMMER. Also, we're working on issue 2 at the moment so if you know anyone in fashion or design fields that would like to be in the next issue, put them in touch with me - info@pearlandhammer.com . I am a little picky with what I allow in it but only in a constructive way - we gotta be the best.

People to Watch - Ryan Romanes #257

This weeks person to watch is Ryan Romanes. Ryan is probably one of the funniest guys I know, not only does he have the ability to make you laugh like you have some sort of uncontrollable bodily twitch, he's one of the most talented up-and-coming graphic designers.

Graphic design is an infant industry in New Zealand and at this stage so many are jumping at the 'idea' of being a graphic designer, but very few have the talent to follow. The discipline requires versatility in aspects ranging from typography and illustration to computer coding and publishing. Those are things that are often inconceivable to your everyday person but they're skills Ryan possesses. He's recently completed an internship with Saachi & Saachi design, where he worked on infographics for KPMG and advertising for the Auckland Theatre Company. It comes as little surprise that he was also a finalist in the recent 'BEST design awards' - a testament to his amazing work.

Ryan has done extensive visual campaign work for The Blue Baths in Rotorua (see images below) which I am completely obsessed with. Check out the redesign he also worked on for their website here.

Ryan your stuff is cray! And I'm obsessed!
