Tumblr Question Time - Anonymous asked... #276

Street style outtakes
Anonymous asked:
"Wot did u study at uni to get yor job?"

I'm trying not to be a 'spelling bitch' here, because let's face it I make spelling mistakes all the time. But just so others don't get all Tom Hanks in the Da Vinci Code (I've got your back young homie) I think what you meant to write was something along the lines of, 'What did you study at university to get your job?'. If indeed this is what you asked, my friend, the answer is not all that easy to articulate. By answering this question I'm delving into the depths of traditionalism, education expectations and role model-ism (no that's not a word). I'll try and make it quick.

Disclaimer: this is purely my view on university education.
If you want to pursue a career in finance, medicine, law, and the like - then yes, in this 'job climate' you most definitely need university. If you are pursuing a deemed 'creative field' then no, not necessarily. I mean, university can be a good thing for the creative folk but generally you get stuck at an institution with a whole bunch of people who think they can paint really great strawberry fields and they don't realize that the impressionists died 80 years ago [deep breathing goes here].

Back to the question. What did I study? I studied Economics at one institution and Media Arts at another. To be honest, neither got me my 'job' (I hate that word). Not once have I been asked 'what did you study?' in an official capacity. It's all about just doing it! I've never taken photographs in a professional capacity, actually I've only ever really used a disposable camera, but now it's part of what I do. I couldn't even tell you what a shutter actually does, but when I was handed the camera I just did it. If you intend on pursuing something in a creative capacity then my advice is to create. Don't stop. When I was 'studying' economics I was often reading art history books. Teach yourself - yo. So I guess the answer to your question is, nothing I studied at uni really got me my 'job'. Vision of where you want to go is enough.

Thanks for your question. You're awesome, keep being awesome!
