SMW Recap: Nick Jonas, Parsons, & tips to be a Social Media Jesus #38

Fashion Week wasn't the only excitement for last week. It was also Social Media Week. Some of you may be thinking, "what the hell?! Social media week?! Please don't tell me about facebook." Calm the f*** down! I'm not going to bore you with technicalities. I'll pick out the best features and list things you should probably know so you don't get 'unfriended'.
L to R : 1. Nick Jonas 'Social Media in the Music Industry'.                 2. Parsons, The New School for Design 'Social Media in Fashion'.
HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Going inside Bloomberg headquarters. That building is built for a modern day Pharaoh. Picture Google HQ mixed with Dubai.
  2. Checking into conferences on the 28th floor. If you're in New York and get to go into any building with more than 20 floors you need to be somebody with a life.
  3. Going to a talk with the head of marketing and social Media for the Grammys, Beverley Jackson. Useful piece of information #1: The Grammy's are planned mid June and fully finished by the 15th of January. Hence when the death of Whitney Houston came the night before, Beverly had 24hours to reconstruct a show (planned almost a year ago) and integrate a tribute. Not to mention the Etta James tribute that also had to be sensitively handled so it wasn't over shadowed.  A lot of people were pissed off with how short the tribute was but given that they had 24hours it was pretty well done. Any other awards show would have reverted to powerpoint slides and comic sans headers.
  4. A talk with Jeff Daschis, CEO of the Dachis Group, at Bloomberg HQ. Favourite quote: "Look at the people around you. Capture this moment. We are on the verge of the biggest technological shift in history. This is as big, if not bigger, than the industrial revolution." Total mind-F.
  5. Using social media in fashion, at Parsons. Not only was this in the building where project runway was filmed but it was totally an eye opener. If you are in any type of creative industry make sure you're on-the-ball with all social media shizz. Knowledge is power.
  6. Using Social Media in the Music Industy, with Nick Jonas. Lets be honest I went to this talk because I knew a bit about him dating Delta Goodrem (I'm sorry) and I sort of had a thing for 'Who You are' (whatever don't judge me). But I was totally surprised. This kid knows his stuff. There were maybe 30 people in the room, so it was quite relaxed and you could ask questions, which was sweeeet. I think the most important thing he said was (which I can totally vouch for from experiencing 'the New York way'), "If you're just starting out the best way to keep moving forward is to be in the right place with the right people. And these days that place doesn't always have to be physical (i.e twitter/facebook)."
  7. Free everything. Social Media week is totally free. You get to hear and talk to people who are changing the world as we speak (well as you read [this] ).
FACEBOOK-er-ing
I tried to tell my friends back in 2009 that interacting on Facebook was one of the most important things you could do, not only for social image but for building lasting connections. They thought I was a weirdo and was just addicted to 'the machine'. Now more than ever it is important for you to do this. Back in New Zealand we still operate on this 'seal the deal with a handshake' syndrome. Which is cool but I assure you change is coming. Woohoo for you if you have a degree in corporate finance. Go be fancy. If you don't, read this:
  1. Don't delete friends. Yeah I'm guilty too but unsubscribe is the best option. Un-friending is bad for your brand and your brand is YOU.
  2. Posts are in ink. Im sure your've heard it before but they are forever. Even if you delete them, they're sitting on a server somewhere in California while nerds feast on your 'idiotness'.
  3. If you want to be deep that's awesome. Post about your journey to the Northern Lights where you saw a polar bear and it stared into your eyes and whispered to you your purpose in life. Or when your boyfriend dumped you for some classy girl who danced on the dinner table for him. Whatever you want. But ALWAYS be conscious that in an internet economy YOU are a brand. People will build a perception about you around the posts you make. Call me the fun killer if you like. Yes I too have those people I check up on because they are so brutally honest with their dramatic lives.
Wow rant rant rant. But if you're reading this you made it to the end. Well done! It was slightly irritating that Social Media Week coincided with fashion week but I managed to get to 12 events. What a boss (if I do ay so myself). I hope you enjoyed some of the wise words I too ingested. I promise future posts wont be as heavy haha.
Ok time to sleep. Y'all take care now! Oh and did you hear? I'll be over in L.A when the Oscars are on. Get your Morgs Stalk-down coverage here. BOOM

And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs
