Something New - The List Edition #411

1. If you haven't seen it yet I've started a "Record of the Week" feature in the sidebar on my blog. Each week you can find a cool new New Zealand artist I'm really digging. The week before last was Lorde's Tennis Court, and the video above is for this past weeks "ROTW" - Frankenstein by Randa. A friend worked on the Frankenstein video and it showed up in my newsfeed so naturally I went on a mad stalk fest. Best decision ever. The 90's themed clip is so well put together. And, Randa's flow is sick. My favourite line, that I weirdly find myself singing at the most inappropriate of times or providing as an answer to a serious question, is, "My gotchi don't swim but my gotchi play tennis." Genius.

2. Also that same friend that produced the clip above, is also making a film. Next week to be exact. She and her team launched a pledgeme campaign to raise $10,000 in 7 days. Why 7 days you ask? Long story short, the last 35mm processing lab in Australasia is closing at the end of the month which means they need to shoot and process the film before doors shut. Guess what? It's been 6 days and they've done it. However, I just thought I'd let you know the campaign is open for another 24 hours. Films always crop up with unexpected costs so it's always good to have a little contingency. There are heaps of cool things you can get depending on how much you donate. For as little as $5 bucks you get a mention in the credits. Awesome. And given the support behind this, Peter Jackson's Park Road Post and the Wallace Arts Trust, your grandma wont be the only one to watch the film. Give it a hoon.

4. I've been like slowly chipping away at being like a healthier person, whatever that means. It's been three months and I'm down 21kgs. I was pretty huge bro #browngirlproblems #holdingontoproblems. Not that a number should ever dictate how you feel about your self but that's just to show you how far I've come, and that I'm quite serious about this. It's all about making better choices. So everyday I post pictures on my instagram of food and exercise (mainly) - cause I'm cool like that. But, if like the old me, you struggle at being motivated I got your back homie. Everyday I post something different about what I'm doing, it's a funtime. Join me? If you hate exercise as much as Peter Griffin then, well, sorry 'bout it. I'm all about the positive.

6. This article about Icona Pop. Can someone please come to my apartment with a bottle of wine wanting to form a band and we just sit there writing songs all night?

The (Delayed) Weekly Wrap - See You Soon NZ #400

Hold the phone! This is my 400th post.

1. I'm coming back to New Zealand next week. Isn't that exciting?! Apart from the whole 'winter' thing. Eff that! I literally came to Cairns with a guitar and 5 changes of summer clothes. Am I going to die when I get off the plane? I think so.

2. I dropped my Ipod on the ground and it has giant cracks in the screen and little shards of glass sticking out of it - but it still works. I'm too attached to it to get a new one, is this a problem?

3. This is my 400th post. What the what?!

4. There is currently a cyclone over Cairns at the moment. Not sure how I feel about that. I'm still going running in the morning :/ . After surviving Hurricane Sandy in NY I really just look at other storms like, bitch please.

5. When I was driving the other day I missed a gear and stalled in front of a police officer. Twas quite Scilarious (that's scary + hilarious).

6. Truth time: Can't wait to get back to working! It's been 2 days since I ended my band manager duties here. And, I'm going CRAZY with nothing to do.

7. As a side note: thanks for reading my nonsense. I see all of you in my blog stats! Just hit 1/20th of a million pageviews for this year, what the actual shit. Lulz.

To which my answers are something like this: 

• Are you asking me that? If so, I'm just warning you our babies will be of colour. If not, awkward.

 However, last week I was being a total bitch and someone asked this:

• Will someone buy me an Easter Egg?

To which my answer was this: 

• No. No-one will buy you an easter egg. You know what they should buy you? A gym  membership #YouJustGotOwned.

The Weekly Wrap - The Grind #393

1. BASQUIAT. This guy. His story. #Learning. Yeah, I hashtag in sentences - gon' do about it? Lulz.

2. WORK, WORK, WORK. I'm beginning to feel the effects (or affects?) (I should know that, dammit) of doing freelance work. It's cool because you make your own schedule but it's also not cool because you make your own schedule. Does that make sense? Help a homie out. I almost just want to pick up any kind of work that gives me a 9 to 5 so I can feel normal. Ha, normal. 

3. I have only managed to stall the car once in the past 9 days. But the times when I'm reversing don't count. Also, to those manual car drivers out there, why is 5th gear so hard to find?

4. Ok I am plugging this again because it is an app that really does feel like you're talking to a human coach. Download NOOM for your android or iPhone. Follow what it tells you to do for a week and I guarantee it change your bod-day*.

5. NYC NYC NYC NYC.

6. I sound checked the today and I did not want to leave the staging area.  Also realized how much I like the stage. It's kind of the same feeling when you're watching a sports game and in your head you're like "ahhh let me out there". Yeah that.

7. I kind of stopped eating meat. I don't know, I feel sorry for the animals. I eat fish tho. Yet I'll happily buy a rabbit fur purse. I don't know how that works. I haven't had meat in nearly a month. What does this mean? Oh God. Tell PETA my mink is dragging on the floor. 

8. This is how I think I feel when I am sitting around in my towel after a shower, the reality is a lot different.

1. I know my tweets have been mainly about exercise but it's literally all I do in between working on graphics for promo material. Prepare yourself - I just found out about free exercise classes in the park. What have I become?! I wont tell you I socialize with soccer moms. Oh, wait. Lulz.

2. P-Money's new track feat. Skyzoo & Havoc. It's so good. Listen here.

3. Brooke James tumblr because, well, he's so good at what he does. Plus, he's from the long ma cloud.

4. The Blue Rose. How did I get addicted to this show when I don't even live in NZ?!

6. Miguel's new video for Candles in the Sun. WOW, just wow. This track is going to be huge. 

7. J Law aka Jennifer Lawrence before, during and post Oscars. I'm not sure I like her movies but from what I saw, she's pretty hilarious.  

8. Just being not near home in general. I've realized how much I love being home yet how much I just slip back into old habits. It's easy to be the 'old' you but much harder to move forward. Woh, real talk.

9. Ok forgive me for another exercise related rant but I just started using this app and it is the best app ever. It's called NOOM. Download it. It's so good! I use the free version. SO good.

10. Going on an internet click fest and ending up on the wikipedia page for Charles Manson. Whaaat? How did that happen.

1. ALL OF THE ABOVE HAPPENED TODAY. I am exhausted. Swimming against currents is not as easy as it used to be. #OldPersonProblems

2. Also on today's list of awesome - The Sunday Star Times published an interview I did with them a while back. Thank you for the wonderful write up. You can quickly go out and get a copy or read it online here. 

3. I have the opportunity to work New York Fashion Week in Feb. Excite. Will I take it? You'll have to wait and see.

4. This Ed Sheeran fellow. Well. He writes intense lyrics doesn't he. He's like the British Frank Ocean. Oh no she di-in't *snaps fingers like a ghetto girl*.

5. Book research has consisted of looking at paper textures and different gsm's. I. CAN'T. EVEN. Argggh. 

6. A week of asking myself ridiculous questions like: Why are my friends getting married? What are children? Why do people want them? Are children really our future? Should I build a robot child as mockery? Would that be assholish? Am I an asshole? Do I need therapy? And so on.

1. I climbed three mountains this week - Papamoa, Mount Maunganui, & Karangahake. My calf muscles hate me. Like they really hate me.

2. Swam in the ocean so much that I find sand in every crevasse of my body. Let's not take that any further.

3. I have lost my car key countless times. I then stand still, and silently ask the universe to return them. Magic - they appear. Doubters gon' doubt.

4. I rapped this for 45 min straight (on repeat) from Waihi Beach to Tauranga. I was rapping so intensely that I began to feel faint and started getting gag reflexes. Excellent. 

5. I went hunting for graffiti in Tauranga. Best idea I've ever had. More graffiti hunting will be done. Check out this 12 foot portrait of Biggie.

6. Yes, I went to Spookers. Believe it or not it was fun. I pee'd. There's definitely a bogan/stipper/teen demographic that goes there. I'm not sure where we fit in to that - Stripboganeens? or just perpetually bored and run out of options?.

7. And I'm working on that book. And, and,  and,  P + H copies are taking a little longer than expected. I may have to fire my American printers. Raaah.

The Weekly Wrap - Thanksgiving, New York Stories & Goals

1. It's so cold outside that you get a headache immediately when the air hits your face. 

2. I had a really homely thanksgiving - roast turkey, seasoned vegetables, mac 'n' cheese, sweet potatoe mash, cheap wine and good company. 

3. I met with a friend I hadn't seen in a few months. It was just like old times. Girrrlll we need to do that more often! 

4. Had an impromptue New Zealand partay at a friends sweet Upper West Side digs (photos to come). A lot of vodka was had, which meant I got sick and went home early. Sadface. 

5. IF YOU EVER COME TO NEW YORK PLEASE GO TO A STORE ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE CALLED REED SPACE. It is honestly my favourite hangout. They have the freaking coolest aesthetic. I flipping love that store. As well as selling the coolest clothes they also have the most amazing range of underground publications. Get that. Check them out here. They're also in one of my all time favourite documentaries called 'Influencers'. Watch that. 

6. It's that time of the year again. Time to set goals and update the vision board. What are your goals? I ask all my friends this all the time. Some of them get embarrassed.  I don't know why. Goals are serious things and you got to put them out there or they wont grow to become reality. Word. 

7. Only in New York: I was decided I'd order some tacos from a roadside food truck yesterday. I went up and placed my order. The woman started speaking to me in Spanish. I shrugged my shoulders at her because I obviously don't speak Spanish. She continued. I just nodded at everything she said so she would hurry up and get me my food. 10 minutes passed and I was handed a white box. Inside were burritos and fries. That was not what I ordered. Or was it? 

8. Nerd observation: The new sketchbook express app for mac is amazing! All the bugs have been fixed. Get it, it's FREE.

9. Oh and like someone made a YouTube video about me. Thank you to that kind person. That was very nice of you. I like that you like my blog. Thanks.

1. I went scootering at midnight in the West Village when there was NO power. Thankfully today power was restored. I don't recommend doing that. But incase of traffic blackouts flares have proven their worth.

2. I went to a halloween party. Such fun.

1. This is my 300th post! Everyday for 300 days. Holla!

2. Hurricane Sandy hit NYC. The subways are very much inoperable, to put it lightly. New Yorkers are saying they have never seen the city so 'shutdown' - EVER. Not even during 9/11. This is big! For those of you who haven't been here before the subways are like the veins of New York, and with out them there isn't any blood flowing. I'm currently stranded uptown, but there are people who are much worse off. 

3. I went to rent a car today. Let's not talk about how badly that went. 

4. I wrote a lot of music while Sandy was making the weather all cray cray. I may or may not be thinking up a few music videos at the moment. Shhh. I don't want to jinx it. 

5. We just found out that some of the subways will be working tomorrow! My roommate is currently drunk shouting "NEW YORK LIVES" - oh Americans. 

6. I have met some pretty awesome kiwis in NY over the last few weeks. So awesome, I love being around people who have ideas and are going somewhere. 

7. Miss my family. 

8. It's my first American halloween and hurricane Sandy snatched that up. Grr. Oh well everything happens for a reason. 

9. Realised I just survived what will go down as one of the worst, if not the worst, natural disaster to hit New York City. Woh. That's heavy.

The Weekly Wrap - Queens, Six60 & Rap #290

1. I went to Queens twice! That place isn't so bad. It has it's moments - good and bad. 

2. Six60 played live in New York Cit-ay! Myself and a few friends decided we'd head on over. Turned into one big kiwi meetup. It was pretty much a concert full of the who's who of kiwi music. Check out the photos here. 

3. I tried the drink 'Four Loko' for the first time. It's apparently illegal but obviously up in Harlem they just don't care. It's like a combination of absinth and 5 hour energy. Shit gets cray pretty quickly. 

4. I rapped Empire State of Mind live in a bar in New York City. Check it out here. 

5. This girl HAS to win X-Factor. She. Is. Incredible. 

6. If you have a few spare moments check out this movie. It's a favourite of mine and I was lucky enough to go to the premiere. I LOVE it. It is about rap; however, I think it speaks for all creative mediums. Check it out. You can find the full version here. 

7. Apart from those fun nights out, I have been working my ass off! And now I need some sleep so caio kids.

The Two Weekly Wrap - NZ, LA, NYC, Fashion Week(s) #256

This is the result of me taking photos of Sarah tonight. This would make an epic inset-editorial. 

It's been a crazy two weeks, I have literally been halfway across the world and back. Do I mind? Not at all.

1. After touching down in New Zealand the first thing I noticed was how small everything was. You know when revisit places you went to as a child and they seems so small? Yeah same thing. Weirdest feeling ever. I think it would be different had I only been on holiday in NY, but given I live here it was deffo a big change. 

2. I actually cried when the Air New Zealand hostess said, "Welcome home to the kiwis onboard". Let's not talk about that. 

3. I surprised one of my friends at work. This is what happened. I walk through door, start looking at her, she looks at me and turns away. I think I've just been snobbed. She then does a classic double take. And shouts, in front of the whole store, "HOLY CRAP WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!". I could have sworn she'd pee'd herself. True story. 

4. Seeing my family was delightful. I miss you crazy fellows so so so much. Everyday.

5. I drove my car in every possible direction. 

6. Coincidentally it was the beginning of New Zealand Fashion Week so I got attend the first day of shows. Not too bad. Ruby and Liam had the goods. 

7. By Wednesday night I was back on the plane to NYC. First stop L.A. I had a 9 hour stopover so I tried to make the most of it by catching up with friends in Hollywood. Turns out L.A traffic is the worst in the world. I almost missed my flight.

8. Touched down at 6:22am in New York, got to my apartment around 7:15am and was up at Lincoln Center by 8am to start my NY Fashion Week duties. I still haven't caught up on that sleep yet. Dammit. 

9. For 3 days straight I had to shoot streetstyle for online publications and my own print work. Here's the thing about streetstyle - it's exciting because you capture crazy beautiful people in fleeting moments. The downside to it is a lot of standing around and often an awkwardness when asking a person for their details - even more so if they're well known and you're not aware of it and then they get insulted because you ask them who they are. I had some serious 'Ugly Betty' moments. You can check them out here, and, here. 

10. The rest of fashion week I was between shows, blogging, editing photos, catching up on my Soustyle work, and writing articles.

11. It's now Sunday after the fashion marathon I've been running and guess what? It all starts again on Tuesday with the Capsule NYC womenswear showcase. I can't wait.

The Weekly Wrap - Work, Sleep, Scooter, Work #220

My new way of getting round the city. Such fun. 

1. This week my life has mostly consisted of editing photos. Followed by me second guessing myself, followed by a re-do, then procrastination on YouTube, then riding my scooter, and so on. Fun stuff.

2. I did, as you can see, finally get a scooter. Ahh it's so cool. I look like a total cool kid (that's sarcasm) riding it around NY, but do I care? No, not really. I mean those red wheels - need I say more? It only gets awkward when an 8 year old pulls up beside you with the same scooter. Let's not talk about that. I was thinking of a name... Maybe Marilyn? Or Carolina? Don't ask me why.

3. Eating some good Malaysian fusion food. Om nom nom.

4. Didn't go to Miami as was planned. Dammit.

5. Wisdom teeth = ouchies.

6. I took some photos after work. I went all paparazzi on Chinatown/The Lower East Side. Check them out. 

7. I got the flu, which I am almost over. Thank goodness. It was 31 degrees today. Sweaty and the flu is not a good look.

9. I got caught in this thunderstorm. I got on a random bus not sure where it was going. Turns out it went almost to my apartment. Score.

3. Went to another industry talk with Young Guru aka Jay-Z's producer. So freaking rad! Read about it here.

4. Woke up at 3am to go and watch No Doubt play in Central Park. So awesome to see them back together. Still completely stuck in the 90's and not caring at all. All I can say is plaid, plaid, plaid.  I took a few pics.

The Weekly Wrap - Going to 'The Dark Night Rises' the Day after the shooting & Watching the Sunset #199

As true as it will ever be. Word.  (image)

1. I went to watch The Dark Night Rises the day after the shootings in Colorado. I got the cinema and the first thing I noticed was the extra security. There were 3 times as many attendants. People were even being searched. Imagine going to the airport - yeah it was exactly like that. I think it was a welcomed custom though. Once I got into the cinema (one of the biggest premiere screens in the world) I was surprised that it was so full given the events of last night. I then, almost immediately, looked around me considering where the nearest exits were and which seat offered me protection should some crazy fuck make it past all the security. I'm not going to lie I have quite often imagined what I would do if some psycho unleashed bullets into my cinema. Would I duck? Do I crawl under the seats? Do I hide under others and play dead? Because I'm a bad ass (and there really were no other seats) I sat on the aisle in full view of the door. Fortunately nothing happened at the movie and I was able to enjoy Christopher Nolan's greatness that is Batman: The Dark Night Rises. Major sad face for those in Colorado.

2. Tonight somebody asked me who my favorite top 3 musicians were. I frowned a little because it's such an impossible question. You'd need a top 3 for every period of music. Just like you would with art. But because I'm so into the rock n' roll revolution period, that happened here in New York, I replied with 1. Janis Joplin, 2. Patti Smith & 3. Lou Reed. That was that. 

3. I watched the sun rise in New York. It was awesome. Although I felt a little judged when we were walking home through the Upper West Side at 5:30am in the clothes from the night before. I don't think people appreciated the fact that we had dressed up just to welcome the sun into the world. Haters. 

The Weekly Wrap - Mermaid Parade, Gin & Nerd Moments #171

1. This week has been pride week so there's been a plethora of flamboyant events happening around the city. Yesterday I went to a mermaid parade at Coney Island, and today I went to the official pride parade. It was somewhat moving to see grown men cry because they had been given equal rights.  Word. 

2. Gin Wigmore was in town for a show on the Lower East Side. I roped a few kiwis together and we all went in support. Turns out we weren't the only kiwis with that in mind. Ended up going out with Gin and her band mates for drinks afterwards. Fun times.

3. I got Cs6! That's a nerd joke that only nerds will get. Holla.

4. Went in search of a rooftop bar to watch the sunset. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful.

5. Acquired my first sunburn of summer (unintentionally). Ouchies.

6. Survived my first heat wave - 38 degrees celsius! It was almost impossible to get any work done. Hello my newest assest purchase - Mr. Fan.

7. Had my first completely lost moment. I was meant to meet some friends for a writers meetup. They sent me the address and I instinctually typed it into my smartphone. I followed the directions that were set into my map and headed for the end pont. Turns out my phone sent me to the wrong side of Manhattan. I ended up at a space age hotel who thought I was a journalist there to interview Shaggy for his newest album. Strange shizz.

2. I went to a party, at a bar, that was hosted by Macaulay Culkin. We basically listened to his ipod on shuffle for the duration of the night. I'm pleased to report back that it was very good music, but I'm bias because I like all music. I screamed and shouted when The Naked and Famous played. Everyone now knows that they're a New Zealand band. I happened to find myself in the 'important people area'. I talked to his brother and sister-in-law for 2 hours about kids, fame, being an adult, and Mila Kunis. It was awesome. He's a good guy and they're a nice family. 

3. I really don't like anything from the resort collections so I refuse to write about them. Not good for business but I was told it's better to say nothing at all than to say something hideously mean. 

4. I found this hiphop-dub-rock fusion drummer today. I told him I wanted to write a hipitty hop song for a laugh- but serious at the same time. I got a business card. Don't know how it will all go down.

5. Public apology to my body for taking it to Ihop aka the International House of Pancakes, again. Sincerest apologies. 

6. Rooftop fun at the Ganesvoort hotel this afternoon. Sun, fruit punch, a bunch of kiwis, and a stunning view of New York- what could be better?
