The Two Weekly Wrap - NZ, LA, NYC, Fashion Week(s) #256
![]() |
| This is the result of me taking photos of Sarah tonight. This would make an epic inset-editorial. |
1. After touching down in New Zealand the first thing I noticed was how small everything was. You know when revisit places you went to as a child and they seems so small? Yeah same thing. Weirdest feeling ever. I think it would be different had I only been on holiday in NY, but given I live here it was deffo a big change.
2. I actually cried when the Air New Zealand hostess said, "Welcome home to the kiwis onboard". Let's not talk about that.
3. I surprised one of my friends at work. This is what happened. I walk through door, start looking at her, she looks at me and turns away. I think I've just been snobbed. She then does a classic double take. And shouts, in front of the whole store, "HOLY CRAP WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!". I could have sworn she'd pee'd herself. True story.
4. Seeing my family was delightful. I miss you crazy fellows so so so much. Everyday.
5. I drove my car in every possible direction.
6. Coincidentally it was the beginning of New Zealand Fashion Week so I got attend the first day of shows. Not too bad. Ruby and Liam had the goods.
7. By Wednesday night I was back on the plane to NYC. First stop L.A. I had a 9 hour stopover so I tried to make the most of it by catching up with friends in Hollywood. Turns out L.A traffic is the worst in the world. I almost missed my flight.
8. Touched down at 6:22am in New York, got to my apartment around 7:15am and was up at Lincoln Center by 8am to start my NY Fashion Week duties. I still haven't caught up on that sleep yet. Dammit.
9. For 3 days straight I had to shoot streetstyle for online publications and my own print work. Here's the thing about streetstyle - it's exciting because you capture crazy beautiful people in fleeting moments. The downside to it is a lot of standing around and often an awkwardness when asking a person for their details - even more so if they're well known and you're not aware of it and then they get insulted because you ask them who they are. I had some serious 'Ugly Betty' moments. You can check them out here, and, here.
10. The rest of fashion week I was between shows, blogging, editing photos, catching up on my Soustyle work, and writing articles.
11. It's now Sunday after the fashion marathon I've been running and guess what? It all starts again on Tuesday with the Capsule NYC womenswear showcase. I can't wait.

Last Day of NYFW - The Shoe Edition #253
Sadly today was the last day of New York Fashion Week, ending with the big collections from Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. Show stopping as always, but commercial as always. Over the past week when I've had my break, from duties that require me to look at a computer screen and answer emails until my finger tips bleed, I got to shoot some street style. These shoes. FYI the 'New Balance' trend isn't going anywhere. The crowds were infected with sneaker disease. Myself included.

None the Richer at New York Fashion Week #252
I kept seeing this group of three people walking into fashion week. I thought I'd seen the girl in the group before but couldn't work out where. I took photos of them each day I was doing street style, just because their dress sense was so insanely cool. Today I they showed up again and some photographers stopped them right infront of me to take photos. Again I was blown away by the clothes they were wearing, but it wasn't until I heard the Australian accent that I clicked. I asked one of them if they were from Aussie label None the Richer. Success. I'd known about NTR from a stint I did in Melbourne. A friend of mine had told me I should check them out. I did, and I stored the name in my expanding brain compartment of people to watch.
The brand was started in 2009 by Ulyana Bezeruk and has since picked up a loyal following. What's admirable is that Ulyana has no formal design training yet she creates at a level many wish they could reach. I think, regardless of what creative field you are in, you need that thing that sets you apart - your style. All too often you see new designers, or rather creators, that have lots of talent but no personal style - they stick to trends. In other words they're followers not leaders. Good talent needs a leader who can steer it in the right direction. Given the bold statement None the Richer have made at NYFW as style setters, I have no doubt there is infinite potential for this brand to perpetually perform at high level. I can't wait to see what comes next. ![]() |

Faces of NYFW - Anna Dello Russo, Joe Jonas, Shoshanna & more #251
I thought I'd put together a post of some of the faces I've shot at New York Fashion Week. There are two days left and I'm still loving it, but I'm super tired. I guess that's what it's all about though right? I also realise I missed the weekly wrap - not to worry it'll be double the fun this Sunday. Nuff talking check out my photos.

Paris Hilton, Bill Cunningham & Street Style at NYFW (day 5) #249
Today I was wandering around Lincoln Center looking for some interesting people to shoot. A woman walked infront of me and I grabbed my camera. She stopped and started posing. She was with another woman who was also well dressed (a more tailored look). I thought 'yeah these two are good shot'. I was looking through my lens and as I was shooting and something registered. I turned to my friend, "Wait, is this Paris Hilton?" She looked at me as if I was stupid. Paris then started walking away with her sister Nicky. Let's just add that moment to the endless list of 'weird s*** that happens to me'. Bill Cunningham also was mulling around. I kind of feel sorry for him now. You can see he just wants to do his job, and people keep pissing him off asking for photos. Leave Bill alone.

The Man Repeller, Whitney Port, & Ari at New York Fashion Week #246
Hanging out in what I call 'The Pit of Awesome' aka the outdoor photo pit. I found Leandra Medine from The Man Repeller. It irritates me how effortlessly cool she is. People always ask me why I do weird faces in photos and well I still can't explain it, but Leandra does it too so stop hatin'. Examples may include this, and this, and let's not forget this. Also out and about was Whitney Port. I really don't understand what she was filming, but she kept answering her phone while the crew directed her to say things. Phone sex commercial perhaps? I kid, I kid. I also saw Ari Seth Cohen, aka the founder of Advanced Style, mulling around. Turns out HONY (Humans of New York) also found him. If you remember a while ago I wrote about a woman called Illona Royce Smithkin? This is the guy that made the world appreciate her. Mad respect [pounds fist against chest like a gangsta]. Look at all of their PRINTS. Want.

New York Fashion Week - Street Style (P2) #245
EYEWEAR, PRINTS, EYEWEAR PRINTS and so on. I am shooting Street Style for 3 days straight at NYFW which means I'm going to have a shit tonne of photos. Therefore, in the best interests of my blog - i.e so it doesn't get engulfed in photo vomm, I have decided to upload them to a new tumblr. And YES I said a NEW tumblr! Internet whore much. So if you want to reblog, look at people who pose waay too much, or you're just interested in what I'm up to then head over to http://morgsphoto.tumblr.com/ . Excuse the fugly theme - I'm working on it [directed at graphic designers], and yes I still have my other tumblr. If you're still reading you must have magic in your pants because I lost myself at 'Street Style'.

What the hell happened last week? #37
I have been trying to think of ways to recap this week without boring you to death with business jargon and computer coding phrases. Let's be honest, as well as you losing focus, I'd probably fall asleep writing about it. So I decided I'd, instead, make you sweet lists of useful things I picked up.

TIPS
- Plan you outfits for each day. But be cohesive. It's like you're presenting your own collection to the public.
- If you're ordering Starbucks within a 2km radius of Lincoln Center (where the majority of FW events are held) they will assume you want low fat milk and no whipped cream. Wahh. Specify.
- Be prepared to bullshit the pants off people. But in a truthful way.
- Hype yourself.
- MAKE CONNECTIONS. Have amazing business cards! I'd definitely look twice at a strawberry centered business card.
- If you're taking street style photos find shots that no-one else has. E.g find another exit (mostly 'show ponies' come out the front). Often the best outfits are seen in creepy lane ways while people are inroute to a show.
- Pack snacks. You will die if you do not have snacks and no-one will care. They will walk right over your rotting corpse with their Louboutin's on the way to the next show. Let's face it, Alexander Wang is more important.
- Take music. Nothing like a little Drizzy or The Black Keys to pump up the confidence levels. Having said that, don't be an Ipod drone who acts 'socially oblivious' to the world. Uncool fool. Uncool.
- Get there EARLY! When I mean early I mean early like 3 hours early. If you don't have the pleasure of being on Anna Wintour's christmas card list then getting there early is one of your greatest assets. Certain stage doors are open if you're there early...
- SMILE like you have just had more botox injections than Dolly Parton. People will find you approachable.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM FASHION WEEK
- Finding Bill Cunningham.
- DKNY shenanigans that resulted in me writing a post and them reading it. No big deal (*puts hands over mouth and tries not to scream).
- Talking smack to try and get backstage. It's more fun and a better story if you weren't invited (cough cough not that I wouldn't love an invite).
- Eccentric people who really didn't conform. Cudos to y'all!
- Getting owned by my coffee just before I got to Diane Von Frustenburg. Raah.
As a side note to my 'LIST' I offered my seat to an older woman on the train. She politely declined in what I thought was english. Before I could ask her where she was from the train stopped and she very kindly (slash loudly for the whole train to hear) said me a prayer in what I now think was Japanesse.
And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs
p.s I'll be recapping Social Media Week tomorrow which includes the Nick Jonas thing, Parsons, and tips on how to be a social media Jesus.
THE END of THE NEW YORK MANIFESTO #36
As most of you know, a friend and I have been doing a collaborative blog called 'The New York Manifesto'. We pretty much chronicled our lives for three months in a weekly vlog. However, Haylie is returning to New Zealand to continue studying therefore the The New York Manifesto has come to an end. It's been a really exciting project to complete and it's something I'm proud to lend my name to. Haylie and I really have had an incredible time in New York. And I will miss Haylie's company and laughing hysterically at completely ridiculous things. But like with all good things you must stop when it peaks and move forward with something new. I hope, for those of you who were regular watchers, you enjoyed it. Here it is, the final vlog.
And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs

THE END. New York Fashion Week + Social Media Week #35
What an insane week it has been! And it's only Thursday! It went something like this: Fashion week, Social Media Week, Fashion week, Fashion week, Fashion week, Social Media Week, Social Media Week, Fashion week.
I'll be recapping the exciting events from New York Fashion Week and Social Media Week on Saturday USA (EST).
But just to get you uber hyped like an ADHD baby sloth, here's some of what has happend in Morgs' world:

- Somehow got backstage at DKNY, but ended up being shown the door. Found myself outside next to Bill Cunningham, and he called me child (if I had died, I would have died happy).
- Wrote about 'momentarily' being backstage at DKNY and tweeted it to them. They responded "...Loved the post". Win. (read it here)
- Went to a talk with the Director of Marketing/Social Media for THE GRAMMY'S, Beverley Jackson. I can't even explain to you the value of the knowledge she provided. We just don't get that in New Zealand.
- Got backstage to Betsey Johnson only to be turned away. Wah. Just let me observe. I shall quote myself here (the worst form of shameless self promotion), "I'm not some weirdo trying to steal Jennifer Aniston's Blackberry. I just want to take photos."
- Went to a talk with Nick Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers. What a mature young fellow (he's a year younger than me but what the hay). Very smart.
- Took copious amounts of street style photos.
- Dropped my coffee all over my pretty blazer. Raaah.
- Watched 'The Vow'. I love a good chick flick.
- Watched 'Safe House'. I love action movies almost as much as my family.
- Discovered Macaroons. My life is over.
- Went to a party DJ'd by Jersey Shore's Pauly D. I have never heard the words 'Yeah Buddy' so many times in one night. Next it'll be in the Oxford Dictionary (too far?).
- Met some amazing people, doing things that will change the world. Total mind-F.
- Woke up just in time to catch the live stream of the Calvin Klein show. Thank goodness!
And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs

Dress Nice = Get Treated Nice #34
Let's keep this short. You dress nice, you get treated nice. Nice is such an ugly word. Look at these pretty folk. There aint no way they're getting sent to the back of the line. Just sayin.
On the Street NYFW Fall 2012
Stay 'nice' kids. It opens doors. Even perhaps the backstage door to the Betsey Johnson runway, but perhaps not past the big guy checking I.D. Dammit. And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs

Backstage at Donna Karan New York + Finding Bill Cunningham #32
The second Donna Karan show just finished in NYC. DK is a fairly big crowd puller and yesterday the likes of Nina Garcia and Ashley Greene were in attendance. Today the Donna Karan runway bleachers played host to none other than Adriana Lima. I have somehow acquired a pass that, if used correctly, can get you backstage. Total win. The hardest part is not the first line of security but the second. I made it past the first but when I got to the second they totally called me out. Dammit. I am pretty much legit (if I do say so myself). I'm not some weirdo trying to steal Jennifer Aniston's Blackberry. I just want to take photos. I shall try again. I love DKNY.
After total deflation from being ushered out I found someone I admire very much . I came outside and Bill Cunningham was right infront of me (everything happens for a reason). I couldn't believe it. I took this photo and I think it shows how much Bill loves what he's doing. There were obviously a few other creeps there who were total Bill Cunningham nerds. They started talking to him and I could tell he just wanted them to piss off so he could take photos. Thus, I didn't approach him. However, when I was walking back to the apartment I found him walking to his bike. Why I know this is because I bumped into him. I was looking at my phone and he walked infront of me so I tried to swerve but failed miserably. I momentarily stopped (then realized who it was) and said sorry, he replied, "that's ok child." My life is complete.
And I'm out.
Peace, Morgs

FASHION WEEK 'The Politically Correct Paparazzi' // BLOGGERS #29
Standing outside Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is beyond a dream. In some ways I'd prefer it to being inside. Nothing really compares to fashion week in New York. New Zealand Fashion Week is exciting and I love it; but New York Fashion Week is on a totally different level. Walking around outside NYFW I lost count of the street style bloggers at 35. We perhaps have 5 or 6 prominent street style bloggers in NZ who actively get out there and do their thang (no that's not a typo I just prefer it to 'thing'). However, being in New York it really makes you appreciate how much of a business street style blogging really is. Walking out of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week hub is like walking into a pit of politically correct paparazzi, and anyone with an ounce style is fair game for a chase down. What's interesting to me is that most of the street style bloggers have more style than the people they're photographing (and I think most of them know that). It often turns into blogger photographing blogger. Someone should do a thesis on the psyche of 'the street style blogger'. It would be freakn hilarious.
I went behind the lens-of a lens-of a street style blogger (if that make sense). Enjoy my snapping frenzy. check below to see more pics
