One of the biggest Andy Warhol exhibitions opened this week at the MET Museum and I may have had a fangirl moment. I remember when the Monet exhibition came to Te Papa back in 2009, I queued for 2 hours to see those paintings. However, the beauty of being in a country like America is that they can bring together huge exhibitions, such as this one, due to their accessibility to art resources. Daayyyuuum. One thing you must know is that as much as I love Warhol, Jeff Koons is my boo. Can you imagine what happened when I walked around the corner and saw the
Marilyn Diptych and Jeff Koons'
Michael Jackson and Bubbles ? I nearly lost my shit. Let me tell you a story about the
Michael Jackson and Bubbles sculpture. Back in 2008 I started a map book of all of the art I NEEDED to see in the world. There was the classics - Titian, Raphael, Leonardo et al. There were the Impressionists (namely Cezanne and Monet),. There was the german expressionists, surrealists, fauvists, futurists, dadaists, abstract expressionists (bar William De Kooning - NOT A FAN). But none more so than the pop artists (past and present). In particular Warhol, Koons and Damien Hirst. I missed going to an opening of Damien Hirst's that I was invited to. Don't even talk to me about that. If there's one regret in life it will be missing that. Anyway, so I started this map and my precious pop artists were at the top. Warhol and Koons both lived in New York (past/present) so I knew their work would be more accessible if I could get to New York. However, there was one sculpture of Koons' that I had to see, that sculpture being
Michael Jackson and Bubbles. Screw Michelangelo's
David MJ & Bubbles is where it's at. I knew the sculpture was housed at the SFMoMA in San Fransciso, and it was my plan to head there after I had finished in L.A. But then the Oscar's & living got in the way, you know - that thug life. I was a little bit gutted I didn't quite make it there; however, fast forward to right now about 9 hours ago. That's what's up.
