The GC + Why I refused to have an opinion until now #162

The GC. A couple of months ago all my friends were asking me what I thought of this new show coming out called The GC. I watched the previews, laughed a little, and said it looked interesting. The first episode screened and then I get all these emails: "You need to watch this it's such a disgrace", "OMG the GC will make you want to vommit more than Trelise Cooper's Air New Zealand uniforms". It was decided- I need to watch this.

Firstly before I say what I think of the show itself I must state - I have mixed opinions about the funding given by the government to bank roll this show. Yes people are dying of cancer, yes that money could be used to buy someone a heart, yes that money could be put toward a special needs classroom, yes we do have a giant current account deficit, yes- I understand that. Just don't forget there have been plenty of other places tax payer dollars have been well spent. Like holidays in Europe for a certain ministers boyfriend and what about that new fleet of Government BMW's? Not to mention paying someones porn account. To counter my conflicting views I tell myself that it's ok because it was just the prime minister donating his salary.

Any-whom, I watched the first few episodes and I looked at the conclusions being drawn by the public. Probably about 99% negative. Ouch. I admit I did cringe a little in in the beginning. But not enough to launch personal death threats and make a facebook hate page- that my friends is mentally unstable. What really peeved me off about the response was the racism. Most the people that had given me their thoughts had not one inch of Maori blood in them, and they were saying it was a disgrace to 'our culture'. This is the part where I say please sit in the corner, close your mouth, and listen. When you can freely call the 'little maori kids' on the corner horis for having no shoes on, and then you put your hand over your chest and get goosebumps during the Haka- you sir, [in the words of Holden Caufield] are a phony.

I think the GC has showed us all that racism is well and truly alive.

As someone who comes from Maori heritage let me tell it to you straight:

Sometimes we want to listen to Bob Marley and feel in touch with Jah.
Sometimes we like our beats fast and our bass down low.
Sometimes we like to eat Chinese food and think we're eating a salad.
Sometimes we like to accidentally borrow someones car. For a long time. Maybe never give it back.
Sometimes our whanau do like to sleep on our floor for months.
Sometimes we do get super angry. Maybe smash a wall. Or two.
Sometimes we do have spawn too young.

But what you probably didn't notice is:

Sometimes we do like to play for our country.
Sometimes we do save people lives.
Sometimes we do make good decisions.
And sometimes a better life means moving overseas.

In all seriousness it's time we stopped with the racism. I for one am happy that the "GC-er's" are on T.V. smiling, having fun, and letting us see them build a better life than they could have in New Zealand. Anyone who says any different, I hate to point out the obvious but there are other T.V. channels (yes, that was said in a condescending voice).

Peace, Morgs
-Another 'one of them' making a better life overseas but will probably be frowned upon because I use the word "oi" and like to listen to Stan Walker. And obviously that means my brain capacity is that of goldfish.

Sorry to my American readers you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. Just think civil rights 21st Century edition.

  1. I for one also have nothing against the GC and me and my brother watch every week, it's good TV! Which is the whole point. And the 'haters' must watch it too every week otherwise they wouldn't know so much about it... Plus hundreds of NZers are moving out to Aus every week, the lifestyle portrayed can't be that bad then!
